VICTORIA – Fishing in the city, right in your own back yard! Time to get your fishing rods out as the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. (FFSBC) is ramping up its urban “Fishing In the City Program” by experimentally stocking Lake Ida Anne in Langford with catchable-size rainbow trout. Lake Ida Anne is located at the corner of Treanor Road and Ashley Place.
Fishing in the City is all about creating opportunities for anglers young and old, novice and expert, right in their own neighbourhoods. These generally smaller lakes are stocked with large numbers of catchable rainbow trout raised at Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery in Duncan.
Working with the City of Langford, The Haig Brown Fly Fishing Club, and the Ministry of Environment, FFSBC will release 250 “catchable” rainbow trout (averaging approximately 230 grams in size) into Lake Ida Anne on Monday May 4th and will release an additional 250 similarly-sized trout into the lake in the fall.
Also being stocked this week with catchable rainbows are Durrance, Prospect, Glen, Thetis, Langford and Lookout lakes. All these lakes in the CRD offer quality fishing opportunities for anglers of all skill levels.
Staff from Vancouver Island Hatchery in Duncan will be stocking other local lakes in up-Island communities in the coming weeks. Our goal is to ensure that anglers, families and kids of all ages will be able to access high-quality, low-cost fishing opportunities close to home.
FFSBC works very closely with the Ministry of the Environment, who provides the stocking requests for each lake and completes regular assessments. The funding for FFSBC comes directly from freshwater angling licence sales. You can now get your licence online at www.discoverfishingbc.ca!
