Surrey’s Green Timbers Lake stocked with Rainbow Trout

On Wednesday, April 15, Lena Shaw Elementary School took two grade four classes to Green Timbers Lake to assist in the release of 700 catchable sized Rainbow Trout. Sixty students helped fish culturists from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC release these fish back into the wild.

The Increased stocking of city lakes is part of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC’s (FFSBC) Fishing in the City campaign, which is designed to help increase easily accessible fishing opportunities in urban areas. This spring 1,468 Catchable sized Rainbow Trout have already been released into Green Timbers Lake. FFSBC hopes to stock a total of 2,500 by the end of the Spring season.

Green Timbers Lake can be accessed from the main parking lot on 100th Ave between 144th St and 148th St in Surrey, B.C.

Additional Information:

FFSBC’s Fishing in the City initiative, has identified four lakes across the Lower Mainland that have good shoreline access, are close to public transportation, and are accommodating and inviting to both experienced and novice anglers. Working with its many partners, the society developed a plan to stock Lafarge and Como lakes in Coquitlam, Rice Lake in North Vancouver and Green Timbers Lake in Surrey with “catchable” sized trout on a frequent basis over the spring, early summer and fall. The Learn to Fish program was established to teach fishing enthusiasts how to catch fish in the newly stocked lakes.

Supported by funding from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, the Sport Fishing Institute of BC, Discover Fishing BC as well as the Province of BC, Learn to Fish was designed to introduce recreational fishing to youth and to groups of people that have traditionally been under-represented among anglers, including new immigrants to B.C. The program will also be offered throughout the summer months on Wednesday evenings from 6-8PM.
